William Newton Gladhill

October 18, 1925 ~ September 24, 2022 (age 96) 96 Years Old


William (Bill) Newton Gladhill, 96, of Frederick, passed away on Saturday, September 24, 2022 at Sunrise of Frederick surrounded by his loving family.  He was the loving husband of 70 years to Janet Lee Gladhill.  They were married on June 15, 1952.

Born on October 18, 1925 in Frederick. Bill was the son of the late Alva N. and Mary J. (Fry) Gladhill.  He graduated from Frederick High School in 1943.

In his early years, he had fond memories working on many farms around Jefferson during high school before entering Military Service.  Bill entered the U.S. Army in 1943 until discharged June 1949 (WWII), stationed overseas in Italy as a Rating Sergeant.  He was with the U.S. Army Reserves in Korea from 1951 until 1953.  Bill received the Korean Service Medal.  Bill was employed with Frederick Automotive and Parsons, Inc. (portion of Fort Detrick).  In 1953 he went to work for C&P Telephone company of Maryland until his retirement in 1983 with 30 years of service.

Bill was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, Frederick.  He was a Life Member of AMVETS Post #9 Middletown where he was a Adjustant during the 1950's.  He was also a Life Member of Francis Scott Key Post#11 and American Legion Member - Last Korean War Veteran Club of Francis Scott Key Post #11 American Legion.  Bill was one of the first members of Frederick County Korean Veteran Memorial Committee, Inc.

Bill enjoyed animals, especially poultry where he was a licensed judge and showed chickens for many years. He was a Life Member of the American Bantam Association and American Poultry Association.  Bill was Superintendent of the Poultry Department, Great Frederick Fair for 35 years.  Bill's other hobbies included growing vegetables in the garden and sharing with family and friends.  He also enjoyed planting flowers and shrubs.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Gail Young and her husband, Frank; Tim Gladhill and his wife, Terri; and Holly Dague and her husband, Dave; five grandchildren Amy Aellen and her husband, Chris; Lindsay Potter and her husband, Zach; Kyle Gladhill, Courtney Gladhill, and Lauren Cumberland; three step grandchildren, Brady Dague and his wife, Megan, Lucas and Perry Dague; and three great grandsons Jace and Cade Potter, and Jack Aellen and two great granddaughters Nora and Aubrey Aellen.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Wednesday, September 28, 2022 at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main Street, Middletown.  Interment private at Jefferson Reformed Cemetery.
