Edward Vernon Smith, age 95, died on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at the caring and loving community of Vindobona Nursing Home where he was a resident and friend of all who knew him. He was the son of the late Harman Russell Smith and Ida Helena Lewis Smith. From his birth on January 21, 1923 to his death he nourished people around him with love, faith, and music. He was a life-time member of St. Paul Lutheran Church and will always be remembered for sitting in his special spot on the back row.

He grew up on the family bicentennial farm in Jefferson. He worked for his father and then took over the operation in the '60s. He continued to milk the dairy cows until he was 65 and "retired" but continued to work the fields and raise beef cattle. He truly never retired until he had to leave the farm for health reasons. He was comforted by being able to still see the farm from the window at Vindobona.

He loved to sing and play his guitar and performed publicly with the Young Brothers and then with his nephew Vic Wolfe as the Valley Boys. He was a true entertainer and loved to tell jokes between songs. He had many hours of enjoyment listening to a collection of tapes he had made over the years of his favorite music.

He is survived by his children Evelyn Vollmer and her husband Donald, Steve Smith and his wife Kelly, and Donna Winck and her husband Kim, all of Jefferson. He is also survived by grandchildren Derick Vollmer, Dawn Bitzer, Meghan Vollmer, Justin Smith, Brandon Cox, Britney Cox, Kimberly Winck, Tyler Winck, Devin Ogg, and Derick Ogg. He was blessed to spend time with his great-grandchildren William and James Bitzer, Karley Smith and Owen Smith, Ashlyn and Jace Ogg. He will be remembered by many nieces and nephews, and by a special friend Barbara Ohler. He was predeceased by eight brothers and sisters, and two who died in infancy. He is also predeceased by his former wife Constance Brown Linton.

The viewing will be at Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home in Middletown on Monday, November 19th, from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00. The funeral will be at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jefferson, Tuesday, November 20th at 11:00 a.m. Pastor Virginia Price will preside. Interment will be at the St. Paul cemetery followed by lunch at the Jefferson Ruritan Center. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, 3864 Jefferson Pike, Jefferson, MD 21755.
