John David Gartrell, 77, Middletown passed in his sleep at home on Friday September 22, 2017. He was the husband of Dorothy McBride Gartrell for fifty-six years. Born March 3, 1940 in Emmitsbirg he was a son of the late George Edwin and Anna Margaret Glacken Gartrell.

After graduating from high school he farmed including twenty-one years in Middletown Valley. Later he drove for Frederick Trading Co. and retired from the Frederick County School Board. He was a member of Christ Reformed Church, Middletown where he had served as deacon and the cemetery board of trustees.
He was an avid Baltimore Oriole and University of Maryland basketball fan.

Surviving besides his wife include a son James David Gartrell (Pamela) of Chambersburg, PA, Dianne Carol Smith of
Greencastle, PA and Janet Michelle Gartrell - Johnson (Katrinka) of Raleigh, NC, seven grandchildren Bradley, Krystal, Tiffany and Bryan Smith; Jamie, David (Kayla) and Matthew Gartrell, four great-granddaughters Brooke, Aubrey, Alexis, Briella and one brother Charles Thomas Gartrell (Lurae) of Titusville, FL. He was predeceased by a brother George Gartrell and a sister Rebecca Barrow.

The family will receive friends on Monday September 25 from 6 to 8 PM in the chapel of Christ Reformed Church, 12 S. Church St., Middletown. Funeral services will be held on 11 AM Tuesday September 26 from the church. Rev. Mark A. Wakefield will officiate. Interment will be made in the church cemetery.
