Mrs. Mary Catherine Poole Gordon, 93, Jefferson, died on Tuesday, May 3, 2016 at the Vindabona Nursing Facility where she had been a patient following a recent fall. She was the wife of the late Lee O. Gordon who died on July 15, 1996. They had been married for 51 years.
   Born on September 11, 1922, at the family farm near Jefferson, she was the daughter of the late Walter C. and Mary Susan Bussard Poole.
   Mrs. Gordon started to school in the one-room schoolhouse, Willowdale, and when it closed three years later, she transferred to Middletown and graduated from Middletown High School, class of 1939. During her teen years, she took piano lessons from three individuals, Margaret Tabor, Mary Hoffman and Sperry Storm. She then continued her music training by studying voice at Hood College for three years under Miss Marie Budde’.
   She was a faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church, Middletown, MD her entire life and was a member and soloist in the senior choir for 62 years. Mrs. Gordon was a teacher and later superintendent in the Kindergarten Department for many years. A member of the Zion Daughters Sunday School class, she was part of a core group of women who provided many meals for a variety of occasions at the church. She was a charter member of the Zion Memorial Garden Committee and served as the secretary-treasurer until the time of her death.
   Mrs. Gordon was a partner in the family farm business, known as Willowdale Farms with her sons, Walter and Joseph, her late husband, Lee, and her late brother, Daniel Poole. She was a member of the Frederick County Farm Bureau.
   Cooking, baking, providing meals were her joys and sharing her many family recipes gave her much happiness. An avid gardener, she won prizes in the local Jefferson Ruritan Garden Contest many times.
   Mrs. Gordon is survived by her four children, Nancy L., Joseph D., and Kathy M. of Jefferson, MD, Walter O. and her daughter-in-law, Marci D. of Middletown, MD, two grandsons and their wives, David and Patricia, and Darin and Lacey and two great-grandchildren, Leah Katherine and Blake William. She is also survived by two nieces and their husbands, Susan Poole Kelley and Michael and Patricia Poole Brown and Quay, their children and grandchildren: Tracey Kelley Franklin, Tina Kelley Bennett and John and Kaylee and Kathan Franklin and Danica Bennett, Matthew Brown and Heather, Mark Brown and Darla, Sarah Starks and Preston and Connor, Mason and Addison Brown and Blake, Brady, Bristol and Blair Starks. Mrs. Gordon is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Beryl G.Jackson of Frederick, MD and numerous nieces and nephews by marriage.
   The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m., Sunday, May 8, at the Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 East Main Street, Middletown, MD. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, May 9 at Zion Lutheran Church, 107 West Main Street, Middletown, MD. The Rev. Kathy Vitalis-Hoffman, her pastor, will officiate. Interment will be made in the Lutheran Cemetery, Middletown. Pallbearers will be: Michael Kelley, Quay Brown, Gordon Culler, Dale Culler, Richard Blickenstaff, and Carlos Yanez. There will be a meal following services in the church social room.
   Memorial contributions may be made to the Zion Memorial Garden Fund, 107 West Main Street Middletown, MD 21769 and the Frederick County Farm Bureau Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 3340, Frederick, MD 21705.
