Ruth Elizabeth Shafer, 98, Jefferson, passed away Friday December 21 at her home. She was the wife of the late G. Donald Shafer. Born in Frederick on November 24, 1920 she was a daughter of the late William Henry and Flora Carpenter Main.
Ruth graduated from Frederick High School and before graduation was selected to work in the insurance business where she continued to work until she married on April 20, 1944, then moving to Mt. Pleasant Farm with her husband and in-laws Oscar and Myrtle Shafer. She was a devoted member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Burkittsville where she served as senior choir director, sunday school teacher and on numerous committees. In her youth she played her violin in various churches for christian endeavor services. Family was very important to her.
She was active in the operation of the Shafer family farm and attended to numerous business affairs. She also supported the Petersville Farmers Club and Ruritan functions where her husband was a member. She was also a member of the Jefferson Fire Co, the Maryland and Frederick County Farm Bureau and the Holstein Association.
She was also interested in gardening, reading and her many friends.
Ruth is survived by her son, Myron Dennis Shafer and wife Teresa, grandsons Bryan and wife Lisa and Brent and wife Autumn and her great-grandchildren Emma, Connor, Allie, Atley, Olivia, Aubree. Her brother Robert Main and wife Barbara and sisters-in-law Mary Catherine Main and Millie Main. In addition she will be missed by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by by sisters Eleanor Magaha, Edna Younkins, and Anna Swartz and brothers Henry, Paul, Millard, James, Herbert and Eddie Main.
The family will received friends on Wednesday December 26 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM at the Donald B. Thompson Funeral Home, 31 E. Main St., Middletown. Funeral services will be held 11 AM on Thursday December 27 from St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Burkittsville. Rev. Kimberly Nunberg will officiate. Interment will be made in the Union Cemetery, Burkittsville.
