Betty Jane Wiles, 91, of Hagerstown, MD, passed away peacefully into our Heavenly Father's arms on Thursday, January 4, 2018, at Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, MD. Born on October 24, 1926 in Wolfsville, MD she was the daughter of the late John W. and Mary B. Poffenberger Harshman. She graduated from Middletown High School in 1944. Betty married Russell P. Wiles Jr. in 1945, and this March would've been their 73rd wedding anniversary.
Betty worked hard all her life starting her married life as a farmer's wife. Upon leaving the farm she worked at American Optical and several nursing home facilities as a nurse's aide. She loved to travel, quilt and crochet. Her hands were always busy. She loved to cook and bake having many family and friend gatherings.
She was a lifelong member of the Grossnickle Church of the Brethren. Her younger days at Grossnickle COB, later moved her membership to the Frederick COB, attending Hales Ford Baptist Church while living in Wirtz, VA for 13 years and upon her return back to Maryland back to Grossnickle COB.
Betty is survived by husband, Russell, a son Richard Wiles and wife Sandy of Wirtz, VA, a daughter Vicki Wiles Linton and husband Jay of Hagerstown, MD, Grandchildren Scott Wiles and wife Tracy, Kim Wiles Basso and husband Kevin, Jason Linton and wife Dana, Joy Linton and husband Jeff Cavanaugh, Great-grandchildren Jacob, Jeffrey, and Jay Linton, Abagail and Rutger Wiles, and Salem Linton-Essmyer, Aiden and Taylor Basso, many nieces and nephews and old friends of the family, and many new friends from Smith Mountain Lake Virginia. She loved the time they lived at the lake and all the devoted friends made there.
Funeral services will be held 11 AM on Tuesday, January 9, 2018 from the Grossnickle Church of the Brethren, 11301 Meeting House Rd., Myersville. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Rev. Donna and Tim Ritchey Martin will officiate. Interment will be made in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Grossnickle Church of the Brethren or to Hospice of Washington County.
