Cynthia Black Berchtold, 80, of Middletown, died Thursday July 27, 2017 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Douglas Kenton Berchtold. Born in Troy Ohio on November 5, 1936, she was the daughter of the late Merrill Wolfram Black and Maxine Elizabeth McCartney Black.

Mrs. Berchtold was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio with a degree in early childhood education; a member of the Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority and member of the Women’s Glee Club that traveled throughout the United States and Canada. She also played the French horn. She taught school both in Milwaukee, WI and Ohio before moving to Middletown.
    
She was both a member of Christ Reformed United Church of Christ, Middletown and the Middletown United Methodist Church and taught pre-school at MUMC for almost thirty years where she was affectionately known as “Mrs. B.” She also tutored many children throughout the years. She was active in the Middletown Valley Athletic Association where she coached both basketball and softball and was a cub scout and girl scout leader. She was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan and loved basketball.
    
She is survived by a son Dr. Craig Merrill Berchtold of Madison, WI and a daughter Marcia Berchtold Rosner of Middletown.
She was fondly known as Elmos to her grandchildren Hannah Elizabeth Rosner, Aaron Samuel Rosner and Faith Cynthia Rosner.
    
She is also survived by her brothers and sisters-in-law Max and Marge Berchtold, Jane and Rich Plaskon, Larry Englert and Carolyn Berchtold. She was predeceased by a sister-in-law Judy Englert. She is also survived by her devoted friends Phil and Mary Lou Smullen. She also leaves behind many wonderful family, friends and neighbors.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, August 2 at the chapel at Christ Reformed United Church of Christ, 12 S. Church St., Middletown from 6 to 8 PM. Funeral services will be held 11 AM on Thursday, August 3 at the church. Rev. Mark A. Wakefield and Rev. Sarah Dorrance will officiate. Interment will be made in the church cemetery.
