Mr. Darl W. Hinkle, of Frederick, died Thursday, April 20, 2017 in Las Vegas, NV. Born in Cumberland, MD on October 5, 1936, he was the son of the late Flossie Virginia Ashenfelter and John Russell Hinkle. He is survived by his daughter Cynthia Adams (Hinkle), brother Larry M. Hinkle and his wife Marcia, brother-in-law Otis D. Kitchen and several grandchildren, a great grandchild, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his spouse, Bonnie K. Hinkle and son-in-law Barry L. Adams. Darl was a life-long member of the Brethren Church. He attended Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, VA where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in English. He earned his Master’s degree in Library Science from Catholic University. He started a distinguished forty year career in Frederick as an English teacher at West Frederick Junior High School, worked at the Central Media Center for the Frederick County Board of Education and ended his career as librarian at Myersville Elementary School.

He served as church organist at the Grossnickle Church of the Brethren with his wife Bonnie who was the choir director. He served at various churches in the Frederick area and offered his musical skills for many weddings and memorial services. Darl was active in the Central Maryland Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. He served on the Church of the Brethren’s Mid-Atlantic District Conference Leadership Team and volunteered his time to the Frederick Church of the Brethren. He loved reading, listening to classical music and hunting local antique shops for what he called “treasures”.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 pm on Sunday, May 7, 2017 at the Frederick Church of the Brethren, 201 Fairview Avenue, Frederick, MD, 21701. A light luncheon will be held in the Fellowship Hall following the service. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Darl Hinkle Scholarship Fund care of The Community Foundation of Frederick County.
