She was born on an Easter Sunday morning, at home in Lewisdale, Montgomery County, on April 12, 1925. She was the daughter of the late Walter and Rosie Smith Haines. She was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Alvin R. Watkins Sr., in April 2009, and by a great-grandchild, David Watkins in 2005. Her brothers John, Walter, Howard, William, and Otis Haines also preceded her in death.

She is survived by three children. Alvin R. Watkins Jr. and wife Ruby, Glenda Watkins and husband Ronald Cole, and Bernie Watkins and wife Cathy; four grandchildren, Robert John, Traci Watkins, and Amber Watkins; and four great-grandchildren. Also, she is survived by her sister, Gertrude Solenberger of Winchester, VA; a sister-in-law Audrey Haines of Purdum, MD; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend Michael Smith of Frederick.

Mazie worked at Acacia Mutual Life Insurance in Washington D. C., and for the A & P Store in Frederick (10 years). She retired in 1989, with 25 years of service from the State of Maryland Laboratory Administration in Frederick.

She continued to be active by doing volunteer work with the Frederick County Hearing Impaired Services for 5 years, for the Frederick Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Select Seconds and Sewing for 28 years, and for the Salvation Army for several years. She was a charter member of the South End Baptist Church and a member of the Myersville Baptist Church. She regularly attended the Frederick Church of the Brethren and was a member of the Christ Quest Sunday School class. She will be remembered for her gardening skills, especially her homegrown tomato plants.

Her wishes were to have a short graveside service. Services will be held Wednesday April 12 at 11 AM at the grave site in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Frederick. Everyone is to meet at the cemetery chapel prior to the service.

Glenda and family, I am very sorry to learn of the passing of your mother. I remember Glenda and Maize walking together nearly every day to get exercise. Peace to you all. Cherish your memories. Let time help lessen the grief.
